How do I adjust the resolution of my Retina display?
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) and MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) displays have a 2880-by-1800 native resolution at 220 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors.
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 and later) displays have a 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors.
If you need to adjust the display resolution, choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu. The Retina display offers scaled resolutions that allow you to have text and objects appear larger on screen, or to make them appear smaller which provides more space on screen.  Note: Scaled resolutions do not offer the same visual quality as the Retina setting. Scaled resolutions may also impact graphics performance depending on which applications you are using.

What applications currently support the Retina display?
All Apple applications included with OS X Lion on your MacBook Pro with Retina display already support the Retina display. These applications include Mail, Safari, iCal, Address Book, iChat, FaceTime, Photo Booth, and TextEdit. Additionally, iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, Aperture, Final Cut Pro X, and Motion all support the Retina display.
I'm noticing functional or visual issues with an application. How can I make it work better?
Try opening the application using Low Resolution mode:
  1. Quit the application if it is currently open.
  2. In the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
  3. In the Applications folder that opens, click the application's icon so it is highlighted.
  4. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
  5. Place a checkmark next to "Open in Low Resolution" to enable Low Resolution mode.
  6. Close the window and double click the Application to reopen it.
Note: You may also contact the developer of the application to determine if they are offering an update to the application for the Retina display.
I notice that some applications have "Open in Low Resolution Mode" already enabled. It this normal?
Yes. Some applications work best using the Low Resolution mode. Other applications will only run in Low Resolution mode. You can try changing this setting by removing the checkmark in the Get Info window for the application. This may or may not be possible depending on the individual application. You may also contact the developer of the application to determine if they are offering an update to the application for the Retina display.
My application wants to take over the screen and use it own resolution settings. Which setting works best?
If you are setting the resolution from inside an application (for example, when adjusting settings in a 3D game), try the 1440 x 900 resolution first. You can experiment with additional resolution settings from there.
What happens when I use an external display with my MacBook Pro with Retina display?
Your MacBook Pro with Retina display automatically optimizes the resolution for your internal Retina display and any external displays that are attached. You can adjust resolutions for displays by choosing System Preferences from the Apple () menu and then clicking Displays.
  • If you have Mirror Displays enabled (under the Arrangement tab in Displays System Preferences), you will see the following under the Display tab on both internal and external displays:
Best for external display, Best for built-in display, and Scaled.
This allows you to optimize for the internal or external display, or even scale the content on both.
  • If Mirror Displays is not enabled, then you are using Extended Desktop mode. In this case, resolutions can be set individually for each display. Check the Display System Preferences window that has the description for the display you want to adjust on the top of the window (there will be a unique preferences window for each display). Adjust as necessary.
I need a resolution for my external display that is not appearing on the list. Is there a way to get more resolutions to appear?
Yes. Hold the Option key down while clicking the Scaled button to see more resolutions. This is only available in extended desktop mode.
Are Windows 7 and 8 using Boot Camp supported on the Retina display?
Yes. You will need to download and install the Windows Support Software using the Boot Camp Assistant to use the Retina display with Windows 7 and 8. For more information see the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide.
Windows 7 starts up with a lot of space and small icons. Is this normal?
Yes. Using the Apple-supplied Windows Support Software, Windows starts up with the maximum dpi (pixels) it supports (144 dpi, or 150% magnification). This can be adjusted using the Windows Display Control Panel.

Can I make phone calls with the iPad?
No, there is no telephone built in. However, VOIP ("Voice-Over-Internet Protocol") applications such as Fring work on the iPad 3G network, and Skype works on WiFi. Skype does not work on AT&T's 3G network, citing "contractual" reasons. (This FAQ previously reported that all VOIP apps were banned from 3G; this was incorrect.)

Can a Mac run Windows and Microsoft Office?

DOC, XLS and PPT icons
Yes. Microsoft Office is available for the Mac, and Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files created on a Mac are fully compatible with Windows. Most other popular applications are available for the Mac, too. But if you need to use a particular Windows-only application, you have a few options: Boot Camp comes with every new Mac, and it lets you run Windows natively — as if your Mac were a PC. If you want to run OS X and Windows side by side, you can purchase Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion. Install one of these applications, along with the Windows Installation CDs, and you can run the occasional Windows program right next to your Mac applications, without having to restart.1

Is a Mac safe from PC viruses?

Yes. The OS X operating system isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers. And although no computer connected to the Internet is completely immune to all viruses and spyware, OS X has built-in defenses designed with your safety in mind. The Mac web browser, Safari, alerts you whenever you’re downloading an application — even if it’s disguised as a picture or movie file. And Apple continually makes free security updates available for Mac owners. You can even have them download automatically.

Will my PC devices (cameras, printers, hard drives) work with a Mac?

A Mac has hundreds of drivers for peripherals preinstalled. Just connect your device and, in most cases, you’re good to go. And a Mac is smart enough to know what to do when you plug in your digital camera: It opens iPhoto and asks if you want to import your recent photos.

Will my keyboard and my “right-click” mouse work with a Mac?

Yes. The Mac is compatible with virtually any keyboard and multibutton mouse, even the ones you use with your PC. Just plug them into the USB ports on your Mac and start working. You can also use the Multi-Touch Magic Mouse or multibutton Apple Mouse, which comes with every iMac and Mac Pro, respectively. And the trackpad on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air offers “right-click” capability — just press the Control key when you click.

Can I work with my existing documents, music files,
and photos on a Mac?

Yes. A Mac can open most files from your PC, including Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), PDFs, MP3s, iTunes songs, WAV files, JPEGs, GIFs, and more.

Can I join Windows networks?

Yes. If you have a network at home or at work, whether wired or wireless, a Mac will fit right in. You can share files with any computer on your network, browse the web, and get your work or home email.

Which web browsers will work on a Mac?

Every Mac includes Safari, the fastest web browser in the world. You can also use Mac versions of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and others.

Can I instant message on a Mac?

Yes. Every Mac comes with iChat, Apple’s instant messaging application. iChat supports AIM and Google Talk. In addition to text messaging, iChat allows you to video chat with friends and family around the world.3 Microsoft and Yahoo! offer Mac versions of their instant messaging applications, too.

What kind of support can I expect?

Every Mac comes with service and support that’s consistently voted the best in the business. If you have a problem in the first year of owning your new Mac, you can take it to an Apple Retail Store to get it fixed or figured out.

Is it easy to learn how to use a Mac?

Every Mac is created with the guiding principle that computers should be easy to use, so you can spend more time doing what you love and less time figuring out how your computer works. If you’ve never owned a Mac, you may need a little time to get used to it. But within a week or two, chances are you’ll get along like old friends. And because all Mac applications are designed to work in the same, intuitive way, once you learn one application — iTunes, for example — you’ll quickly pick up iPhoto, Mail, or any of the other software that comes with your Mac.
